Internationalisation at Curtin
Curtin University of Technology was an early leader in Australia in the field of international student recruitment and in 2007 enrolled over 8,800 international students from nearly 100 countries onshore and over 8,600 students offshore. It has developed extensive alliances to support its academic activities with major campuses in Sydney and Sarawak and with partnerships in 17 countries including Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. Curtin is also currently establishing a campus in Singapore due to commence in 2009.
Curtin's international enabling plan aims to build on these achievements and to integrate an international and inter-cultural perspective into all its activities, including research and development, teaching and learning, and management policies and systems.
The primary objective is to provide a high quality Australian qualification for the 17,000 international students that are enrolled at Curtin. In doing so, Curtin also aims to provide an Australian experience that will provide lifelong benefits to those international students who come to our campus in Perth and at the same time to take advantage of their presence to provide an international flavour for the Australian students who study here.
Particular themes that the University is focused on are:
- Strengthening existing effective offshore programs and establishing collaborative campuses.
- Establishing and fostering strong relationships and collaboration with high-impact research-intensive offshore universities.
- Developing a culture of internationalisation amongst all Curtin staff as part of the University's ongoing processes (new courses, etc.).
- Promoting strategies to increase the level of internationalisation within the curriculum in teaching and learning courses (see Frameworks for Internationalisation).
- Developing and promulgating strategies, based on best practice, for integrating international students in the classroom.
- Developing and implementing training programs to assist staff to understand diverse cultures.
- Developing opportunities for staff and students to be involved with international community activities (Curtin Volunteers, Rotary, etc.).
